I sing a lot of happy songs, I sing a lot of love songs, but some of my favorite songs on this record are the ones with a little tension, with a little bit of hope and a little bit of loss for love. I really do like sad songs. He's a very real person just the same as somebody who's looking up at the stage watching us. Whatever it is, he's just doing what he would do backstage with his buddies and that's where you win, because we're all just real people. I see it every night, every person in the crowd, and that's something special. "Mean to Me" is always going to be one just to see everybody hold their lights up during the line "If I could be the fire in your fireflies." I've seen a stadium of 50 or 60,000 people hold their lights up to that song and it's never left my mind. Onstage you see everybody is just arms around each other, and for a moment in time everybody loves each other. It's the simplicity of it.
